TheRembrandtDatabase

Another 14 paintings from the Rijksmuseum online as of now!

10 December 2015

Today art-historical information and technical documentation of a second group of ‘Rembrandt’ paintings has been added to The Rembrandt Database website. The total number of paintings from this institution in our database has now increased to 28, with more than 2000 documents or records with meta data.

In september last year the first group of 14 paintings from the Rijksmuseum, including "The Nightwatch", was presented on our website. The second group consists of more of the smaller and mostly earlier works by Rembrandt or works formerly ascribed to him. Among them are the "Musical company", "Joseph telling his dreams to his parents and his brothers" and "Landscape with a stone bridge". Like the other paintings all of them are presented with a comprehensive list of the history of conservation and research. Information on earlier treatments is provided, such as the one of "Old man in military costume" (copy after Rembrandt) by the conservator H. Heydenrijk in 1903, in addition to more recent conservation programs. See for instance the before, during and after pictures of the 2005-2006 restoration of "Tobit and Anna with the Kid".

While working on the documentation from the Rijksmuseum, documentation from other researchers was also added to our database. Therefore you will also be able to find information on X-radiographs by Alan Burroughs and dendrochronology reports by Peter Klein in the records of the Rijksmuseum paintings.

Research curator Jonathan Bikker, documentalist Bas Nederveen, and conservators Petria Noble, Ige Verslype, Anna Krekeler and Gwen Tauber have provided the database with data and have been working on the presentation in close collaboration with the RKD.
