18 paintings from The Leiden Collection now online

The Leiden Collection in New York has enriched The Rembrandt Database with more than 150 research documents on eighteen of its paintings.
The Leiden Collection has generously shared research data on fifteen paintings by Rembrandt, as well as three Rembrandt-related paintings. Among the works in the collection are three of Rembrandt’s earliest paintings from ca. 1625-1625, Stone Operation (Allegory of Touch), Three Musicians (Allegory of Hearing), and Unconscious Patient (Allegory of Smell); Self Portrait with Shaded Eyes (1634) and Minerva In her Study (1635), as well as the recently acquired Bust of a Bearded Old Man (1633), Portrait of Petronella Buys (1635), and Man with a Sword (1644). Portrait of Rembrandt in Oriental Dress (ca. 1631) by Isaac de Jouderville, and Rembrandt’s Mother (ca. 1628), are also among the works included. Aside from image documents such as X-radiographies, infrared images, and raking light images, written reports on dendrochronological analysis and technical summaries on the paintings are also now available online.
Since The Leiden Collection was formed only in the past sixteen years, many of its paintings had previously undergone scientific research and/or treatment before entering the New York-based collection. Thanks to collaborations with other partners, the Rembrandt Database has been able to collect technical documents from four different institutions and/or individual researchers on the paintings of The Leiden Collection: namely, the Cultural Heritage Agency in Amsterdam/Amersfoort, The Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies in Cambridge (MA), the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and René Gerritsen Art & Artresearch Photography. Additionally, private conservator Menno Dooijes has kindly granted permission to publish online a treatment report written by him, and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm has done the same for a series of X-radiographs of Minerva in Her Study, which were made at an earlier date. These research documents greatly complement the data shared by The Leiden Collection.
